Charles Johnson is an American novelist and fiction writer, winner of the 1990 National Book Award in fiction for his work, Middle Passage, and a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship in 1998. He served as a director of the creative writing program at the University of Washington and went on to hold the S. Wilson and Grace M.
